Vertebrate Fauna

The Monarch Area has abundant wildlife. In addition to the large, well-known mammals, such as deer, elk, bear, and mountain lion, there are many smaller mammals, such as the pygmy shrew and the redback vole.  The table below lists the common mammals seen by residents and visitors.  To see photos of these animals, use the Image Search Engine at Google and search for the common name or the genus and species.

As is the case throughout Western United States and elsewhere in the world, there has been a drastic decline in the amphibian population.
